No Easter treat for FC

Borussia Dortmund - 1. FC Köln 3-1 (1-1)

Szene of the game between Cottubs and Cologne

On the 27th match day of the season, 1. FC Köln went down 1-3 (1-1) away to Borussia Dortmund. In front of a crowd of 80,552 spectators at the Westfalen-Stadium, Nemanja Vucicevic put FC in front (10'), but strikes from Neven Subotic (29'), Tamas Hajnal (49') and an own goal by Pedro Geromel saw the home side turn the game on its head.

Nema opens the scoring

FC coach Christoph Daum made just one change to the eleven that began against Leverkusen, with the more attackingly minded Nemanja Vucicevic getting the nod ahead of the more defensive Kevin Pezzoni in midfield. And a telling change it was! The home side started well and had a couple of chances to open the scoring but with just ten minutes on the clock, Vucicevic played a one-two with Ehret and finished the move by slotting into the bottom right corner to give the visitors the lead.

The set-back appeared to shake the home side into action, as Sebastian Kehl and Tamas Hajnal both came close to levelling the scores before a BVB defender finally equalised. Alexander Frei delivered a corner into the penalty area where Neven Subotic rose to head home. The game would remain interesting, although see no further clear chances, and so the sides went into the break locked at 1-1.

Hajnal sets BVB on their way

Just minutes into the second period of the game, FC were caught out cold. Firstly Felipe Santana struck the angle of the goal following an attempted Mondragon clearance (48') and just two minutes later, the home side were in front. A cross by Frei was cleared by Miso Brecko, but only as far as Hajnal, who volleyed unstoppably inside the left post - 1-2.

FC went in search of an equaliser, but Borussia always looked dangerous and were eventually rewarded for their efforts with nine minutes to go. Frei broke down the left and delivered a low cross into the area. In an attempt to clear, Geromel stuck out a foot but unfortunately turned the ball into his own net to seal a 1-3 away defeat for Köln in Dortmund.
